We are holding a general membership meeting Tuesday March 22nd at 6:30 p.m. in the Jack and Denny Smith Community Center (MPR) at Mt. Washington School.

At the meeting we will discuss:

    Our biggest fundraiser of the year "A Night of Comedy" - FOMWS 2011 Auction happening April 29th.
    An upcoming campaign "Walk the Mountain" to raise awareness about devastating cuts to our school budget, and what "our mountain" can do to help.
    The way YOU would like to see the funds we raise spent, by filling out a priority list which will be given to our School Site Council and Administration.
    An overview of what FOMWS has done so far this year in support of our school and our community.

We sincerely hope that you can all attend, and that you come to the meeting with a heart full of hope and a belly full of determination!

Mt. Washington Produce Collective, Thursdays at Mt. Washington School

HOW IT WORKS:
The Produce Collective is a subscription program, where members receive a
weekly box of farm-fresh produce delivered to mt. washington Elementary school.
Members pay for their box in advance online at www.equitableroots.com, and can order in 1 week, 2 week, or 4 week increments.

A portion of your purchase stays with the Friends of Mt. Washington School,
to help support our classroom gardens, campus beautification and sustainability projects.
Boxes will be available for pick-up outside the Parent Center every Thursday from 2:30 to 5:30.
The rate per box is $18, a great value!

“Chinese Orphan” is the first Chinese opera to ever win an international prize. As part of their effort to promote international cultural good will and understanding, the Yu Opera has been on world tour and performed at many international sites, including Japan, Singapore, France, Italy and Australia. Yu Opera of Henan, the largest province in China, is only second to Peking Opera.

Zhao Dun, a loyal officer was killed by Tu Angu, a traitor. The play focuses on the fate of the orphan Zhao and the risk Cheng Ying and others take when they launch a battle for justice. Cheng Ying’s brilliance and human nature emerged by saving the orphan and raising him, while experiencing the anguish of losing his son and wife, and enduring the humiliation of being abused, misunderstood and tortured for sixteen years.
春秋战国时期，晋国忠臣赵盾一家三百余口被奸贼屠岸贾所害。围绕着赵氏孤儿的生死存亡，程婴等人冒死历险，与屠岸贾(tu angu)展开了一场正义与邪恶的较量，善良与残暴的比拼。通过救孤之险、育孤之艰、失子之痛、丧妻之悲、被唾骂的屈辱、被误解的痛苦和十六年精神与肉体的双重磨难，凸现了程婴人性深处的光辉，折射出了不畏强权、维护正义、坚韧顽强的伟大民族之精神。法国十八世纪文学大师伏尔泰曾将此剧改编成《中国孤儿》在巴黎上演，产生了深远的影响。

Thank you to everyone who donated items to our Flea Market fundraising event. A special thank you to Nina Zippay for coordinating the event; to Dennis Murphy for coordinating the donation drop-offs and pick-ups; and to Warren Christensen for coordinating the publicity. We are grateful to all the volunteers both from the community, and from the school who helped at the event. Lastly, thank you to Superior Market for the use of their parking lot.

Flea Market Friday Drop-Off, November 5, at Mt. Washington Elementary

Look for the truck and drop-off your slightly used items at Mt. Washington Elementary School on Friday, November 5, if you are not able to bring your donated items on the day of the Flea Market. Mt. Washington Elementary parent Dennis Murphy will be there in the morning at 8:00 am, and at pick-up time at 2:30 pm to receive your donated items. We will also need volunteers to help at the Flea Market between the hours of 7 am and 3 pm. Thank you for supporting Mt. Washington Elementary and we hope to see you there!

Silent Auction 2010: A Great Success!

Thank you to everyone who came out in full force to revel and enjoy the 5th Annual Auction 2010, which was held at the historic 20th Century Women's Club in Eagle Rock. Over 200 attendees enjoyed the wonderful food prepared by our own culinary skilled Mt. Washington Elementary parents, Cajun style of course; listened and danced to the authentic and catchy music of Bonn Musique Zydeco; enjoyed a free massage; imbibed a drink or two prepared by our very friendly bartenders; and engaged in exciting bidding wars, hoping to win one of the beautiful baskets put together by our parents, or one-of-a-kind designed and made by our own Mt. Washington students and family members, or a jewelry or two handmade by one of our talented Mt. Washington artists, and other hundreds of items donated by parents, businesses and community members.

Most importantly, we are extremely grateful to all of our committee members and volunteers who selflessly donated countless hours, skills, talent, money, equipment, and then some, in order to make this event a great success. A special thank you goes to Ariella Roberts, for chairing the event. In addition to maintaining a full time job, and together with her husband, raising a 2 year old daughter and a 7 year old son, managed to take the reins and showed everyone that yes, we can do it!

We hope to see all of you next year!

Auction Planning Meeting: Friday, April 9, 2010

We're down to the last leg! We won't meet on the week of April 2 as it is officially Spring Break. So we hope to see everyone on Friday, April 9, one week and one day before the fun event. Donations came pouring in on Friday, March 26, and we are busy, busy, logging in all the wonderful items we have received. Again, thank you to the hardworking people who have been out in the community soliciting donations, and to our room parents and teachers who have been working hard to meet the classroom auction project deadline. We still need a lot of volunteers to help at the auction event. Please stop by the Parent Center to sign up for volunteer help. The last two meetings are held at the Parent Center, from 8:15 to 9:30 am. We hope to see you then.

It's Silent Auction Time! April 17, 2010 at the Women's 20th Century Club

The 2010 Silent Auction will be held on April 17, at the Women's 20th Century Club in Eagle Rock. Our Spring Silent Auction is one of Mt. Washington Elementary's biggest fundraiser. All proceeds are donated to the school to help pay for student programs such as teachers' aides' salaries and the p.e. program, Focus Fish. The Arroyo Seco Neighborhood Council invites you to meet director
Louise Hogarth and view her award-winning new documentary, "Angels in
the Dust." The film tells the inspiring story of Marion Cloete, a
university-trained therapist who—with her husband and two daughters—
fearlessly walked away from a privileged life in a wealthy
Johannesburg suburb to establish an extraordinary school that
provides shelter, food, and education to more than 550 South African
children affected by the AIDS pandemic. Admission is free. Due to the
serious topics addressed in the film, it is not recommended for

NOV. 9, FRI., 5:30-9:30 p.m.--FRIDAY FAMILY FUNdraiser TO BENEFIT
THE SCHOOL
Celebrate the week's end and bring the whole family for a relaxing
evening. $15 per adult/$10 per child gets you dinner (pizza, chili,
salad, dessert) and a family-oriented entertainment line-up: the Mt.
Washington Elementary Chorus, a comedian from the renowned Ice House
Comedy Club in Pasadena, and a rousing set of soul jazz from O-Three.
In addition, the Friends of Mt. Washington School and the Mt.
Washington Assn. are giving away free memberships to new members. All
proceeds go to help pay for Teachers' Aides at Mt. Washington
Elementary. This event is sponsored by the Friends of Mt. Washington
School, the Mt. Washington Association, and the Mt. Washington
Preschool and Child Care Centers. For more information, respond to

VARIOUS MONDAYS & TUESDAYS, 7-8 p.m.--TAI CHI CLASS
We have a continuing Tai Chi class led by Greg & Eleana Williams
being held weekly here at the JDSLCC. In recent years, increasing
attention has focused on the benefits of Tai Chai as a form of gentle
physical activity for promoting health and well being, and as a
moving meditation for stress management and disease reduction. Check
the calendar and come to learn to play Tai Chi with us! For more

THURSDAYS, 7-8 p.m.--YOGA CLASS
Rejuvenate your body, calm your mind ,,,with a one hour yoga class
every Thursday from 7-8 pm. The instructor, Helen Ciulla is a
registered yoga teacher with Yoga Alliance. Each class includes
asanas; postures and movement, conscious breathing, mantra and
meditation/deep relaxation. All levels welcome. Bring your own mat or
